Kasabian at The Fonda – photos & videos of UK band’s triumphant return to L.A.

Posted on 19 April 2012 by Cheese Sandwich

On Tuesday night, I was able to catch a headlining Kasabian gig. To put this in perspective, this was a show I’ve been aching for ever since I saw them open for Oasis at a half-full Shoreline Amphitheater in 2005.

It’s been a long wait, and while their set at Coachella last Saturday was a great warm-up, the show at The Fonda (ex – Music Box) was everything I could possibly have wanted.

Opening the gig were The Dear Hunter, an eclectic indie/rock band that delivered a great set at Coachella last weekend as well. I’ve seen them play before, and each time they impress me more and more.

After a short break, it was time for Kasabian.

Tom flashing gang signs

There’s a reason this band plays stadiums and headlines entire nights of U.K. festivals. They’re flawless live.

Vocalist Tom Meighan is endlessly engaging, sashaying around the stage, clad in a denim jacket and sunglasses that he’d repeatedly pull off his face, dramatically.

Guitarist Sergio Pizzorno is perhaps even more of a beast onstage, alternating between backup and lead vocals, precise guitar work and amping up the crowd – something the band did exceptionally well. After tossing us white t-shirts with words written on them (for some kind of taping, presumably the Last Call with Carson Daly program which was advertised all night), they charged through a 16-song set featuring some of my favorite tracks of theirs, like Shoot the Runner, Re-Wired, Club Foot, L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever), I.D., Vlad the Impaler (complete with a few bars from The Prodigy‘s Smack My Bitch Up), and Switchblade Smiles.

I was hoping for Processed Beats, but oh well.

Crowd-wise, this was one of the best, most liveliest ones that I’ve witnessed since moving to L.A. in 2008. Normally, people stand around with comp tickets and $13 Jack & Cokes, disinterested in what’s going on while a smattering of true fans bop around excitedly.

Not the case at this show – the crowd was electric. Feeding off the energy put forth by the dudes on stage, the near-capacity crowd went apeshit for the entirety of their set, and it was great to see.

Kasabian have been overlooked for years in the United States – this was their first U.S. tour that I’ve noticed since the gig opening for Oasis, 7 years and 3 albums ago.

This was one of my most anticipated concerts of recent memory, given that it’s been so long, and it couldn’t have been more satisfying.

Kasabian, thank you. PLEASE don’t take 7 years to come back, we need more shows here.

Setlist:
Days Are Forgotten
Shoot the Runner
Velociraptor!
Underdog
Let’s Roll Just Like We Used To
I.D.
Thick as Thieves
Take Aim
Club Foot
Re‐Wired
Goodbye Kiss
Fast Fuse
L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)
Encore:
Switchblade Smiles
Vlad the Impaler
Fire

Below, enjoy some photos I snapped of the gig. For more insight (and a handful of sexy videos) from a fellow Kasabian enthusiast, hit up ConcertConfessions.

Kasabian Bring “Days Are Forgotten” to Letterman (Video)

Posted on 13 February 2012 by Cheese Sandwich

Kasabian made a rare appearance on U.S. soil tonight, playing Days Are Forgotten on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Thanks to The Audio Perv, you can watch the video NOW, rather than wait until it airs here on the West Coast.

If you weren’t aware, Kasabian’s 2011 record Velociraptor! is pretty damn great, and they’re actually touching down on the polo fields this April for both weekends of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. You best believe I’ll be there, I’ve been waiting to see them since I saw them open for Oasis back in 2005.

So without further ado, check out Days Are Forgotten. Dave seemed to enjoy it…

At the Drive In Has Reunited!

Posted on 09 January 2012 by Flak

After an 11 year hiatus, the creators of the mighty album, Relationship of Command, have returned. I of course speak of El Paso, Texas’ own At the Drive In.

Back in 2001, some ugly conversations took place, and a bitter taste was left in everyone’s mouth, including the fans. The aftermath gave birth to Sparta and the much more popular Mars Volta (whom I also love I’m sure you’ve noticed seen my posts over the years here), and that was more than enough.

But now, through the mysterious play-on-words tweet last night:

“¡ ATTENTION ! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS …NOW…OPERATIONAL”

The band is slated to play several dates this year, with the first confirmed dates being the double-weekend Coachella Festival this April. Check out the lineup here if you haven’t seen that post yet.

Keep it locked on their website for more tour info, and I will keep you in the loop as updates come out!

Until next time my friends,

~Flak

Best Coast: iTunes Session

Posted on 05 June 2011 by Smoking Barrel

Best Coast has been coasting (yeah, it’s a little too clever, but I had to say it) off the success of their debut album, Crazy For You, since July of last year. Thus, it seems appropriate that they would be the latest band to hop on the iTunes Session train toward additional album sales. Although there are only a few new songs on the EP, Best Coast actually comes across as an extremely impressive acoustic/live act.

At Coachella in April of 2011.

The album kicks off with a previously unreleased track called “Over the Ocean.” Lead singer Bethany Cosentino’s usual motif of ennui and dissatisfaction remains present in the lyrics: “Flying over the ocean always makes me feel so low/I remember looking out the window seeing nothing but blue and grey.” Following “Over the Ocean” is a stripped down version of their best loved single, “Crazy For You.”

California girl makes good.

Other tracks that can also be found on Best Coast’s full-length release, as well as this iTunes Session, include “Goodbye,” “Boyfriend,” “When I’m With You,” and “Our Deal.” The standout songs are, naturally, the ones that cannot be found elsewhere, such as the band’s revamped version of the Loretta Lynn classic “Fist City,” a cautionary tale about what happens to women who fuck other women’s boyfriends.

In addition to being known as the lead singer of Best Coast, Cosentino is also known for dating Wavves frontman Nathan Williams.

Cosentino’s vocal introduction on “When I’m With You” is another highlight of the EP as she croons the opening lyrics acapella. In the interview portion of the album, Cosentino notes that she has grown more comfortable with the sound of her own voice, whereas, before, she would insist on ladening her songs with heavy guitar riffs to mask what she viewed as her singing imperfections.

The darling of L.A.

Cosentino’s self-deprecation persists throughout most of the interview, from discussing her decision to leave Brooklyn and return to Los Angeles to her incredulity over originally wanting to call the band Sun Dried (as in, yup, sun dried tomato. Because she’s Italian and likes the sun). While I’m not generally one to be bowled over by the iTunes Sessions gimmick, Best Coast delivers several propitious punches on this exclusive EP.

Coachella to double the fun in 2012 with two weekends of desert magic

Posted on 31 May 2011 by Cheese Sandwich

This morning brought some pretty dramatic news from the Coachella/Goldenvoice camp.

Next year’s Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival will take place over TWO weekends – April 13-15 and April 20-22.

If you were one of the thousands of indie fans who missed out on tickets to this year’s normal, one-weekend festival, you might have a better chance next year.

Goldenvoice posted this nice message on the Coachella home page:

In an effort to try and accommodate everyone who wants to experience the festival, COACHELLA 2012 will be two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends. We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people.

We know many of you were unable to attend this year’s festival because passes sold out much sooner than anticipated. We were truly surprised by the overwhelming response and remain honored by your passion and enthusiasm. We also know some of you purchased through non legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com.

It’s pretty bold to try and get the same lineup to commit to two consecutive weekends, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Fans are already whining and crying about the change, with some on the Coachella Message board losing their proverbial shit.

The layaway presale option for 2012 Coachella 3-day passes will start this Friday, June 3, so if you’re financially ready to commit to a festival a year from now with no set lineup, have at it.

Otherwise, just sit back and wait for more information.

Lollapalooza Lineup announced!

Posted on 26 April 2011 by Cheese Sandwich

The lineup for this year’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago was announced this morning.

Headlining the weekend of August 5-7 will be Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.

Other notable additions (among many) include A Perfect Circle, My Morning  Jacket, Deadmau5, Ween, The Cars (!), Arctic Monkeys, Death from Above 1979, Explosions in the Sky, Deftones (who are listed MUCH MUCH TOO LOW on the bill), Manchester Orchestra, Cage the Elephant, and Damian Marley & Nas.

Of course there are a ton of other acts on the bill. Click here to check out the full lineup.

My comments on the lineup: a bit heavy in the “bands that played both Coachella and Outside Lands” department, but there are also enough notable artists who avoided the other festivals to make Lollapalooza worth the money.

Ticket information and event details are available here on Lolla’s official site.

The Strokes try a new approach with challenging new record “Angles”

Posted on 21 March 2011 by Cheese Sandwich

I Love the 80s

This week, The Strokes release their new album, Angles, their first since going on an “indefinite hiatus” after touring for 2006’s First Impressions of Earth. That’s a long time for a band that burst onto the scene in 2001 with a huge, “we’re bringing in an entirely new era of rock music” buzz around them.

The band has said some not-so-cheery things about the recording sessions for Angles, even going so far as to say that it was an “awful” experience. That might make someone expect it to sound as fractured as the recording process that created it, but for the most part that isn’t the case.

If the band’s hiatus was an attempt to take some time off and refresh their creative batteries, then it’s safe to say it was well-timed. First Impressions of Earth was decent, but at that point, as the band’s third album in 6 years, it was apparent that they were running out of ideas. The music on Angles is VERY different from the tried-and-true “Strokes sound”. The songs are not straightforward rock numbers with vocalist Julian Casablancas slurring his words over Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond, Jr.’s guitar riffery.

Instead, Angles is filled with much more abstractly arranged and structured songs, such as album opener Machu Picchu. Sounding like it was lifted from a Talking Heads album, it’s a great introduction to the odd vibes of this album. There’s no lack of groove on this one, accentuated with some echo-y guitar work and some sweet percussive touches. Casablancas snarls about putting your body to the test and trying to find a mountain I can climb before humming over the instruments toward the end. It seriously sounds like it could be a song made in 1986, and that statement is meant in the best way possible. After calmly singing most of the song, Julian yells a bit at the end until the whole thing comes to a raucous finish.

Under Cover of Darkness, the most Strokes-ian song on the record, finds Casablancas sounding younger than he did on Is This It way back ten years ago. It’s a bouncy, catchy song, primed for radio play, despite Julian’s claim that he won’t be a puppet on a string. Valensi’s guitar solo after the first chorus is pretty juicy, too.

Things start getting weird with Two Kinds of Happiness. Beginning with Julian’s low-register humming and building steadily with staccato guitars, the song is notable for its inability to really go anywhere yet still remain interesting. It builds and builds, bringing in some fast guitar noodling before going back to the downbeat vocal harmonies. It’s definitely an experimental song, and one that a lot of casual Strokes fans may find very confusing.

You’re So Right, written by bassist Nikolai Fraiture, ramps up the strangeness, with even more off-key vocal harmonies and Casablancas sounding as if he was making up his vocals on the spot. You’re So Right is not a crisp, tight song, but rather another attempt at being really unpredictable and experimental. Despite its bizarre elements, the song works thanks to the ominous tone and frantic drumming by Fabrizio Moretti.

Photo: We All Want Someone To Shout For

The chorus of Taken for a Fool is reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is admittedly a strange comparison to make when discussing the Strokes. Julian says things like You’re so gullible but I don’t mind/I don’t need any more women right now/ Monday, Tuesday is my weekend right before another great instrumental break driven by Moretti and his drum kit. This is one of the album’s strongest tracks, with every band member at his best.

Games brings back the 1980s again, synth and gentle guitars giving way to a strong chorus featuring Casablancas’ layered vocals. Its downbeat, low-key flourishes are similar to those found in You’re So Right, but this song will probably be easier to get into than the previous one, in part due to the synth and a pretty smooth instrumental part in the middle.

Call Me Back is the album’s mellowest moment, and is a bit more straightforward than the adventurous, all-over-the-map sound of the other songs. Because of that, the song is not as grabbing as the others. But hey, every album needs a slow jam, right?

Things pick up again with Gratisfaction, a song that sounds oddly familiar and yet new at the same time. Maybe the sound is “vintage”, maybe it’s “throwback”, but whatever it is it’s a good time. On Metabolism, Julian laments that I want to be outrageous/But inside I know I’m lame, which could either be some scathing self-criticism or just words that fit the verse. Whatever their intent, the song is a standout in the same way You’re So Right and Games were. The downbeat instrumentation gives the song a quiet intensity that fits Julian’s vocals perfectly.

The album closes out with Life Is Simple In The Moonlight, a tune that finds Julian mostly singing softly and often along with the guitar melody. Rather than end the album with a bland softer song, Life Is Simple wraps things up on a catchy and memorable note.

Angles is a much more challenging Strokes record than the previous three. Their hiatus and the markedly different approach with this record suggest that they were bored with their old sound. On this new one, there are also shades of Julian’s solo album Phrazes for the Young, which was also very 80s-tinged and synthed-out much in the same way Angles is.

These songs aren’t as immediately accessible as Last Nite, Reptilia or Someday, but they’re a solid representation of where the band is now. The album is the end result of a tumultuous, high-pressure experience in the studio, and has given the band the same kind of intensity and hostility that they had back in their early days.

Despite their current internal conflicts, Angles is the Strokes saying that they’re back and making new rules this time, and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.

See you at Coachella, dudes!

The Big 4 metalfest set to melt faces in Indio

Posted on 25 January 2011 by Cheese Sandwich

Attention, dudes with pickup trucks and big cases of Coors Light: If you were bitter that the “Big 4″ (consisting of heavy metal royalty Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer) tour had thus far been only watchable by European citizens or on your TV set, fret no more.

This morning, the big announcement came from Goldenvoice that there will, indeed, be one Big 4 festival at the polo fields in Indio, California on April 23, which is, yes, the very same fields that one week prior will host Coachella.

Read more about the festival, which hasn’t been fully announced yet, over at The Scenestar.

This festival show will be sandwiched the indiestravaganza at Coachella on April 15-17 and the country explosion Stagecoach Festival on April 30-May 1. Talk about a diverse set of crowds, huh?

Oh, watch this video to get you pumped up for this metalsplosion.

See you on the polo fields! \m/
