We all know the song "At Last," perhaps one of the most romanticized envisionings of love at first sight (not to mention played at every single wedding I've ever been to). But James was much more than this song. Her vocal stylings, appearance, and gumption paved the way for so many female artists, whether black or white.

In spite of suffering from cancer, James was unstoppable, performing well into her twilight years. The renowned singer even appeared on Dancing with the Stars in 2009 to sing "At Last." Her other hits included "Trust in Me," "Breaking Point," "Tell Mama," and "Bobby Was His Name." In James' absence there is an irrevocable void in the music industry, but her legacy will undoubtedly continue.
